My name is Harley and two days ago, I was sexually assaulted by my stepfather while in Canada, a foreign country to me and his home country.
For background, I am a twenty-two year old queer individual with a vagina, and I’m currently finishing the final classes I need before graduating through summer online courses. The house is in a rural area, between mountains, woods all around us and residences far apart. After the assault, I sought help from the neighbor, who happens to be his sister, and I was denied access to the phone to call for help and my stepdad came over to semi-drag me back.
I stopped fighting, and that’s when he set me in the car, went back to finish talking to his sister. I waited, and then I ran, barefoot through the woods, climbed a neighbor’s fence, went inside their house, through it when nobody was there and ran across the road. By luck, a man was outside two houses over, and he ran to me, helped me inside, and the couple living there called the cops. The cop referred me to a transition house/women’s shelter, which is where I am currently. My stepdad maintains nothing happened, and my mother is questioning whether it did, while nearly the entirety of the rest of my family feels the same outside of my sister.
Because I ran barefoot, I received severe bruising that later made it difficult to walk, and I was transported to the hospital. They found a fractured right foot and sprained left ankle.
I lived in North Carolina, but I intend to travel to Boston, MA so I can stay with a friend and try to get a desk job while my feet heal. My stuff is largely still in NC along with my car, so my sister who lives there has offered to try and help me get it all towed up to where I end up moving. I am enrolled in the final online courses required for my graduation from my university, and a third has been payed off. The remaining amount is approximately $600. My likelihood of achieving temporary housing is fair to good due to good friends, though I am injured and unsure of job options. My car is uninsured, as well as myself, and so I’ll need to get insurance (six months worth, from my understanding, in order to prove I’m committed) in order to utilize my car for transportation. This will be approximately $800.
This campaign is important to me because it’s literally the difference between a new life and, honestly, having no clue where I’m going. I have several people offering to help, but it will take a lot more than they are able to give, but I am extremely grateful. I’m grateful to anyone who donates whether it be $10 or $1 —and for those who are unable, if you could share a link or spread the word, I’d be very appreciative.
I’m asking for 10,000 as a ceiling number, but I’d be happy with 1,000 or whatever amount people are willing to offer. It’s only been a couple days, and I’m at a loss for exactly how much I’m going to need in order to get home and start a new life.
Thank you to everyone who donates as well as those who share and send well wishes. I’m really grateful.
